Muslims took that peninsula from the Byzantine Empire. The first Ottoman leader used the dissolution of the Anatolia-ruling Sultanate of Rum in 1308 to gain independence for his empire. His son - Orhan started to take territory from the Byzantines and as he did it efficiently, he gained the first city in Europe in 1354 (Gallipoli). In the next decade Ottomans managed to conquer many lands on Balkans and defeat the Byzantine Empire.
